Today we are going to learn how to express wishes in Spanish. You can do it using different structures and set phrases.
Also, you will learn how to properly wish somebody someone, express your dreams and desires and talk about your expectations in the future.

- Que + subjunctive
Que + subjunctive is one of the most common structure that Spanish speakers use to wish somebody something or to hope that something good happens to them.
This structure can be used as a sentence itself or as a dependent clause. When used as a dependent clause, the main clause would be in the indicative: “Te/le/les/os deseo”.
– Mañana tengo el vuelo a París – ¡(te deseo) Que tengas un buen viaje!
– Tomorrow I will fly to Paris – (I wish you) a nice journey! Have a nice journey!
-Que disfrutéis del fin de semana en la playa = I hope you enjoy your weeekend at the beach
This structure is usually used in set phrases, such as:
– ¡Que aproveche! = Enjoy your food!
– ¡Que tengas un buen día! = Have a nice day!
– ¡Que tengas mucha suerte! = Best of luck to you!
- Ojalá que + subjunctive
Ojalá + que can be used when we talk about others or ourselves. Also, in this case we express a wish, a desire that might be possibly fulfilled in the future.
– ¡Ojalá que podamos volver a vernos pronto! = Hopefully we will meet again soon!
– Ojalá que Ana consiga el trabajo = I hope that Ana gets the job
- A ver si + indicative
Besides expressing a wish, use it in Spanish also to show interest, curiosity, expectancy.
– A ver si vienes a visitarme a Berlín = Let’s see if you come to visit me in Berlin
– A ver si quedamos pronto = Let’s see if we arrange to meet soon
- Soñar con + infinitive
That is another way to express a wish. If we long for something or dream of doing or having something, we can use this structure.
When using soñar con, we talk about ourselves. That is, the subject of both main and dependent clause is the same (yo).
– Sueño con tener una pequeña casa en el campo = I long for a small house in the countryside
– Sueño con viajar a América Latina = I dream of travelling to South America
Soñar con que + subjunctive
In this structure the subject of the main clause is different form the on in the dependent clause. Let’s see the example below:
– Sueño con el día en que no hayan más guerras = I long for the day when there will be no wars anymore
