Discover L’ETNO: a journey through Valencian traditions.

Hello, students and lovers of Spanish culture! Today we want to take you on a trip to one of Valencia’s cultural treasures: the Valencian Museum of Ethnology, also known as L’ETNO.

This museum is a must-see one for those who want to learn more about the traditions and history of the Valencian Community.

In the cultural activity that our Spanish school has organised this week for its students, we will have the opportunity to visit it and continue learning in a special way.

What is the L’ETNO museum?

L’ETNO is dedicated to the preservation and dissemination of Valencian popular culture and traditions. Since its opening in 1982, it has been a place where the customs, ways of life and cultural expressions of this rich and diverse region are celebrated and studied.

What can you find in L’ETNO museum?

The museum offers a varied collection of permanent and temporary exhibitions that explore different aspects of life in the Valencian Community. Among the permanent exhibitions, you can discover:

  • Traditional life: A look at the rural and urban life of Valencians through the centuries. From agriculture to crafts, gastronomy and traditional dress.
  • Festivals and celebrations: The Valencia region is famous for its festivities, and in this section, you can learn about emblematic festivities such as Las Fallas, La Tomatina and the Holy Week (Semana Santa).
  • Material culture: A collection of everyday objects that reflect the life and customs of the Valencians, from household utensils to agricultural tools.

The museum is divided into three main themes: the city, the huerta valenciana and the secano (dry land).

In the section dealing with the city, we can observe the changes that the capital of the Turia has undergone over time as a result of globalisation. Likewise, if we pay attention to the section on the Valencian huerta and its marshes, we will see the stereotypes that a large part of the population has about them.

Finally, in the area dedicated to dry land, the focus is placed on other lesser-known realities that also exist in these territories (industrial cities, depopulation, emigration and the exploitation of natural resources).

Activities and Workshops.

L’ETNO not only offers exhibitions, but also a series of activities and workshops that allow a practical immersion in Valencian culture. You can participate in workshops on traditional cooking, handicrafts, folkloric dances and much more.
These activities are perfect for students of Spanish who want to practice the language while learning about the local culture.

Guided Tours.

The museum organises guided tours in several languages, including Spanish, for groups and individual visitors. These tours are an excellent way to delve into the history and traditions of Valencia with the help of experts.
