What are the 5 typical and most popular Spanish desserts from Valencia? Comunidad Valenciana is not only about paella. The region offers a huge quantity of sweet desserts that will please even the pickiest ones.

Flan

Egg flan, coffee flan, vanilla flan, chocolate flan, orange flan… Spaniards love flan. Unlike pudding, it doesn’t contain pieces of bread. Flan is very popular after-lunch dessert among locals. This jelly delicacy is made from milk, sugar and eggs. The ingredients are cooked in a water bath that is called baño María in Spanish. It’s eaten cold and topped with sweet caramel.

Fartons

Fartons are inseparable companions of horchata – a drink from tiger nuts (chufa). Horchata and fartons combo is more common as sweet afternoon snack than after-lunch dessert. What’s better than dipping a fresh-baked farton in ice-cold horchata?

Churros with chocolate

Churros are popular all around Spain, not only in Valencia. Normally, they are eaten in huge quantities during parties and feasts, such as Fallas in Valencia. Read our previous post about food during The Fallas to learn more about churros.

Coca

Coca is basically sweet bread. Normally it’s covered with almonds, walnuts and raisins. Sometimes, cocas can be filled inside as well. This depends on the region as every town and village has its own idea about coca.
Cocas can be savory as well. They look like pizza but they have less topping. One of the most popular cocas is coca de anchoa, but you can find them with every possible ingredient – tuna, olives, ham, artichoke, vegetables, tomato, onion, spinach, peas, etc.

Turrón

Turrón is a nougat with almonds and honey and it originally comes from the Valencian town Jijona. It’s a typical Christmas treat but you don’t have to wait until Christmas to try it.
