There are some basic key expressions that every student needs to know to express his/her feelings in Spanish. Therefore, today we will learn how to say I miss you in Spanish.
In Spanish, we have three ways to say that. Let’s take a look at them!
Echar de menos
It is one of the most common way to say I miss you in Spanish and one of the most used phrases with the Spanish verb echar. If you want to learn more of them, please, go back to our previous post!
The phrase echar de menos is composed of:
1. Direct object pronoun: te/la/lo/os/las/los
2. The Spanish verb ECHAR
3. The adverb mucho/muchísimo (optional)
4. De menos
OR
1. The Spanish verb ECHAR
2. The adverb mucho/muchísimo (optional)
3. De menos
4. Noun / Preposition A + person nouns /
Let’s see some examples with this phrase:
- Te he echado mucho de menos = I have missed you so much
- María echa de menos a su perro = María misses her dog
- Cuando esté en Japón, echaré de menos nuestras excursiones del fin de semana = When I will be in Japan, I will miss our weekend trips
- Después de una semana de acampada, echo de menos mi cama = After a week of camping, I miss my bed
- Echo de menos bailar contigo = I miss dancing with you
Echar en falta
This is another common phrase in Spain to say that we miss someone or something. Although echar en falta and echar de menos means almost the same, there is a very subtle difference between them.
In fact, Spanish speakers mostly use echar en falta to indicate the absence of someone or something while echar de menos has a more emotional connotation.
With regard to its use in a sentence, echar en falta has the same phrase structure as echar de menos.
Examples:
- Echo en falta un buen ordenador portátil = I miss having a good PC
- Echamos en falta a Pablo en el trabajo = We feel Pablo’s absence at work
Extrañar
“Te extraño” is the most popular way to say I miss you in Spanish speaking countries of South America.
In a sentence, we use extrañar the following way:
1. Direct object
2. The Spanis verb EXTRAÑAR
3. Adverb (mucho, muchísimo)
OR
1. Subject
2. The Spanish verb EXTRAÑAR
3. The adverb mucho/muchísimo (optional)
4. Nouns / Preposition A + person nouns
Examples:
Extrañamos mucho a los abuelos = We miss the grandparents very much
Os extraño. Espero que volváis pronto = I miss you. I hope you come back soon
Extraño nuestra casita en el campo = I miss our little house in the countryside
