Today let’s continue playing with Spanish words and learn more about homographs and homophones.
Last time we explained the homographs, we studied three words to introduce you to this words’s category. Nevertheless, the Spanish language has plenty of them. For this reason, the more we know, the higher our Spanish level will be.
Pila
• Battery: Se esta descargando la pila del reloj, tienes otra para cambiarla?
• Sink: Pon los platos en la pila, yo los lavo después
• Pile: Tengo que ordenar la pila de documentos encima del escritorio.
• Baptismal Font : Tienes una foto de mi sobrino en la pila de la iglesia el dia de su bautismo?
Jota
• Alphabet letter J: Mi nombre es Jasmine, con la Jota
• Spanish dance: Sabes bailar la jota?
Canal
• (Tv) Channel: Mira este canal, es muy chulo
• Canal: El canal de Suez
Puente
• Bridge: El puente de San Francisco es el mas grande del mundo
• Long weekend: El martes es fiesta, me quiero coger el lunes de puente
• Arch: Me duele el puente del pie.
Cola
- Tail (of an animal): cuando los perros son felices mueven la cola
- Queue: hacer la cola (v.) / la cola para pagar es muy larga
- Glue: para pegar esta hoja tienes que ponerle cola
As we said, the words above are called homographs. Another category of words that also common to find is the homophones. These words have a different spelling but similar pronounciation, the meaning is still not the same. As for the homographs, to distinguish the homophones the context is always essential.
Tubo
Tube: el tubo de la lavadora tiene un hueco
Tuvo (past perfect of the verb to have): Estoy feliz por él, ayer tuvo una cita con una chica
Hola (hi, hello) | Ola (wave)
Varón (male) | Barón (baron, nobleman)
Baya (berry-fruit) | Vaya (subjuntive present of the verb to go)
Vello (hair) | Bello (handsome)
Hecho (past simple of the verb to do) | Echo (past simple of the verb to pour)
Sabía (past perfect of the verb to know) | Sabia (wise)
Ora (to pray) | Hora (rezar)
Botar (to bounce) | Votar (to vote)
Huso (spindle) | Uso (I use)
Aprender (to learn) | Aprendher (to apprehend)
