Do you know how to use the ingestion verbs in Spanish? If you are learning these Spanish verbs, check out our post today;)
In today’s post we will solve one of the most frequent questions that arise to our students during their Spanish courses. In Spanish there are several verbs of ingestion: eating, drinking, drinking, swallowing, smoking, etc. All these verbs can be combined reflexively and not reflexively. Next we will see the cases in which each type of conjugation is used.
Non-reflective conjugation
The first thing when we use non-reflexive conjugation is when we do not specify the food that is taken.
Comer con la boca abierta es de mala educación (Eat with your mouth open is rude).
Esta tarde he tomado un poco de vino con amigas (This afternoon I have had some wine with friends).
In addition, we use non-reflexive conjugation, talking about types of food or products that we consume.
Alicia no toma café porque le provoca migrañas (Alicia does not drink coffee because it causes migraines).
Marta es vegana y no come carne (Marta is vegan and does not eat meat).
For the latter, we use non-reflexive conjugation when we talk about the quantities not determined.
He tomado un poco de chocolate caliente con churros, están muy ricos (I have had some hot chocolate with churros, they are very rich).
Ayer comimos muchísimo en el buffet libre (Yesterday we ate a lot at the free buffet).
Reflective conjugation
As you have seen from the previous examples, in most cases with ingestion verbs non-reflexive conjugation is used. However, reflexive conjugation does not refer to specific and specified products.
Me he comido todo el chocolate que compré ayer (I’ve eaten all the chocolate I bought yesterday).
Aaron se bebe toda la botella de cerveza de un trago.(Aaron drinks the whole bottle of beer in one gulp).
Jorge se come tortilla de tres huevos cada día (Jorge eats an omelet of three eggs every day).
