The World Press Photo Exhibition is already in Valencia. Find out more about the most prestigious photojournalism exhibition in the world in the blog of El Rincón del Tándem 🙂
Today we dedicate our blog to the World Press Photo Exhibition, the most well-known international photojournalism exhibition.
As you know in our Spanish school El Rincón del Tándem in Valencia, we are passionate about photography. Therefore, we are up to date with all the events related to the photography in Valencia.
Among them, the WPP documentary photo exhibition that our city hosts every year.
To begin with, we remember that the WWP Exhibition is the traveling exhibition of the award-winning photo series at the WWP Contest. That is, the international contest of graphic journalism and documentary photography organized annually by the Word Press Photo Foundation, that this year celebrated its 62nd edition.
This event aims to bring graphic journalism to all types of audiences, defending freedom of expression and human rights.
Through the images, many of them of great emotional impact, it is intended to connect the public with current crucial events.
Specifically, the exhibition is structured in 9 categories. The categories deal with social and cultural phenomena, key events in politics and economics, and even topics like nature and sport.
In this 2019 edition, we find emblematic images of great historical significance. Like, for example, the series about the first time of Iranian women in a football stadium (Forough Alaei), the photos of health emergencies due to the opioid epidemic in the USA (Philip Montgomery). Or the images of the protests claiming for the abolishment of the anti-abortion laws in Ireland (Olivia Harris).
Of course, the exhibition will tell us about ongoing conflicts and migrations. In fact, the winning photo is the one by the American photographer John Moore. The photo tells us about the tough immigration policy of the Trump administration, through the touching photo of a policeman registering a woman in front of her crying girl, on Texas border.
Walking through the exhibition will be like following the guiding thread of any kind of violence against people and their rights…
Among the novelties of this year, we highlight the prize for the best documentary and the introduction in the digital narrative of Interactive Documentary of the year and the Online Movie of the year.
Furthermore, the most pleasant surprise is that Valencia will also have its place in the exhibition, thanks to the Falleras pictures by Luisa Dörr. The Brazilian photo reporter who portrays Valencia’s modern face thanks to the encounter between tradition and multiculturalism.
In Valencia the WWP exhibition is host by the Chirivella Soriano Foundation at the Joan de Valeriola Palace (Carmen neighbourhood) from the 19th October to the 17th of November.
Each year the Foundation, in collaboration with Doctornopo, carries out a program of activities dealing with specialized training and guided visits.
Thanks to these proposals, the exhibition turns into an integral project that actively involves citizens by providing them with the means to interpret and understand social journalism thoroughly.
By the way, our Spanish school is not going to miss it! So we will go with our students from the Spanish course to the exhibition to live this experience together 🙂
Finally, we remind you that if you like photography, El Rincón del Tándem gives you the opportunity to learn Spanish and practice with your camera at the same time with the photographic course.
See you soon!
